Internship Writing
Office of Cross Culture and
Leadership Development
As a Senior, I accepted an internship in the Office of Cross Culture and Leadership Development for the Emerging Leaders program. In this internship I took the roll of communications and writing specialist meaning that I was put in charge of all of the emails that were sent out as well as editing and updating the curriculum booklet that we gave to the staff facilitators.
Emails
The following are drafts of the emails that I sent out to the participants in the Emerging Leaders Program. While writing the emails, I wanted to make sure that I could reuse them in the future, so I made sure to use very direct language.
Internal Proposal
While reviewing the curriculum at the beginning of my internship, I realized that I could make some changes that would increase the overall effectiveness of the program. I drafted a proposal and submitted it to my supervisor which then prompted a meeting where we discussed changes that we could make to the curriculum.
Curriculum Additions
After the proposal meeting and discussing what changes we wanted to make, I began editing the curriculum. The following is a file with all of the additional content that I wrote.
Academic Writing
I kept a journal throughout my internship detailing what I accomplished every day. For one of the projects during my internship class, I described a week at my internship site and how the class readings for that week pertained to what I accomplished.

Saturday Night Live Paper
Burke's Pentad in Public Writing Paper
As a final project for my rhetoric class, I wrote an academic paper on how Saturday Night Live produced creative ideas. Throughout the paper, I analyzed the different aspects of the production process of SNL and how they help promote the production of creative ideas.
One of the major projects that I did in my writing for the public class involved analyzing Kenneth Burke's pentad; act, scene, agent, agency, and purpose, and discussing how they pertain to public writing.
Pitt News Portfolio Article
During my Sophomore year I wrote a piece for the Pitt News about the importance of portfolios for Art, Writing and English majors. I conducted interviews with three professors at Pitt and one music student.
Emoji Expression Papaer
Nonverbal communication involves many aspects of how our actions effect the message that we send verbally. In this paper I surveyed people and saw what the similarities were between Emojis and regular facial expressions.
Forrest Gump Papaer
As a final paper in my Rhetoric and Culture class, I chose to write about creating a sculpture of the iconic scene from Forrest Gump where Tom Hanks is sitting on the park bench offering people chocolates.
One of our assignments in my Advertising and Fundraising class was to analyze and re-write an existing advertisement. I looked at GE's advertisement, "What's The Matter With Owen -- 'Big News'". My rewrite focused on making GE sound like an enjoyable company to work for.
